What are Essential Oils?

Understanding Essential Oils

For centuries, essential oils, the aromatic extracts derived from plants, have held humanity captive with their enchanting properties. As we navigate the realm of holistic wellness, it becomes essential to understand the nature of essential oils, exploring their origins and the incredible benefits they bring.

Essential oils are concentrated, volatile compounds extracted from various plant parts, such as leaves, flowers, bark, stems, and roots. These oils encapsulate the unique fragrance and therapeutic qualities of their botanical source. The term "essential" pertains to the plant's essence rather than implying indispensability for life.

How Essential Oils Are Extracted

Obtaining essential oils is a meticulous art, with 3 common methods in practice:

1. Steam Distillation: In this traditional method, steam passes through plant material, causing the essential oil to evaporate. The vapor is then condensed, separating the oil from water. Imagine using steam to get the smell out of a plant. That's what happens here. The steam takes the smell away, and when it cools down, we get the oil.

2. Cold Pressing: This is like squeezing the smell out of certain fruits, like lemons or oranges. It's great for oils with a fresh and fruity scent. especially effective for oils like lemon, orange, and grapefruit.

3. Solvent Extraction: This is another common method that is used to extract from delicate flowers like Jasmine. Here's how it works: we pour a special liquid (solvent) over the flower petals, and the essential oil dissolves into this liquid. The solvent can be things like carbon dioxide, butane, alcohol, or other chemicals. After this, we get a kind of thick material called concrete. Perfume makers like to use this, but it has some extra stuff like waxes that we need to clean out. We do this by using alcohol, freezing, and gently vacuuming, and then we get what's called an absolute. The good thing about this method is that it captures the pure smell of the flower, which is excellent for making perfumes. But, if not done carefully, some of the chemicals from the extraction process might stay in the oil, which could cause skin issues. There's also a newer method using carbon dioxide, or CO2 extraction which is safer and better for the environment.

How Essential Oils Are Used

Essential oils are awesome because we can use them in many ways in our daily lives:

  • Inhalation: Inhaling aromatic compounds promotes mental and emotional well-being, leveraging the olfactory system's direct link to the brain. Breathing in their nice smells helps our feelings and thoughts. It's like having a fragrant garden in our nose!
  • Topical application: Diluted with carrier oils, essential oils make massages feel amazing, offering relaxation and easing muscle tension. Aside, certain oils, like lavender and tea tree, with potent properties, are integrated into skincare for soothing and antimicrobial benefits. As essential oils are so concentrated, we recommend that you always dilute them with a carrier product before putting them on your skin.
