An essential oil or eo in short is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid, that is extracted naturally from plants/flowers/barks/fruit peels etc. and has been widely used for its therapeutic properties in our health and well-being. Read more about the Essential Oil 101 in our blog post. 

As essential oils are derived from Mother Nature, it is void of synthetic chemical components and many of these oils are well known to provide support with our health, boost our overall immune system, deter seasonal flu threats and even reduce discomfort. Additionally, the fragrances of the essential oils help to create an positive mood and environment.

Carrier oil is a vegetable oil derived from the fatty portion of a plant, usually the seed, nut or kernels. Carrier oils on their own have different therapeutic properties. The choice of the carrier oil will depend on what therapeutic benefit you are looking for. A carrier oil is used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin. A carrier oil will also help “carry” the essential oil into the skin, and hence the term "carrier". Essential oil is not oily as compared to carrier oil and should evaporate.

This brings to an important point - carrier oils and essential oils are important partners/best buddies/BFFs/partners-in-crime! If you dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil before applying it to your skin, the carrier oil will help prevent the essential oil from evaporating! That means you are getting more essential oil into your skin which means you need less essential oil!  the therapeutic properties of the essential oil will only be strengthened by the carrier oil! Another reason you need to dilute essential oils is because they are strong and can cause serious damage! 

A synergy is a mix or blend of essential oils all similar in therapeutic properties and chemical families. Each essential oil has its unique properties and when mixed with another essential oil, it creates a synergy that combines all the wonderful properties from each member oil.

While most essential oils and plant extracts such as peppermint are generally recognized to be safe when used to flavor foods, it is not recommended to ingest the essential oils unless under medical supervision. Please read our Disclaimer for more information.

Some of these reasons are toxicity concerns, adverse skin reactions and breathing problems. Children typically would have lesser immunity than adults and therefore more prone to concentrated substances. Essential oils that are labelled with KidSafe are generally recommended and safe to be used on and around children.
